Marine Department taking steps to curb greenhouse gas emissions from ships
BANGKOK, 28 September 2009 (NNT) – The Marine Department has initiated cooperation with state and private agencies to launch a campaign to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Thai ships for Maritime Day 2009.
Director of the Marine Department Chaloh Kocharat said 90 of Thailand’s exported goods were currently transported by ship. Thailand’s over 400 commercial transport vessels have become a noted contributor to greenhouse gases, prompting the Marine Department to take steps to convince operators to use more fuel-efficient vessels and instigate measures to reduce their impact on the environment.
Currently, regulations on emissions have only been imposed on smaller ships but have been received well by operators. The Marine Department however, has resolved to elevate efforts to the global stage by conforming to the urgings and regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The IMO is presently finalizing new designs for boats that will greatly reduce their effects on the environment.
