Thai poultry producers pushing for EU trade quota to be raised
BANGKOK, 28 September 2009 (NNT) – The Thai Broiler Processing Exporters Association has issued a call for the government to negotiate a hike to export quotas with the European Union (EU).
Thai Broiler Processing Exporters Association Manager Kukrit Arepagron reported export predictions for the Thai poultry industry on Monday, saying that this year’s figure would be similar to last year’s sales at about 400,000 tons. He noted that high demand for Thai poultry was seen in the EU with 161,000 tons of chicken products already exported to the region this year. Trade with the EU has hit a quota ceiling however, prompting Thailand’s poultry producers to urge the Commerce Ministry to negotiate for increasing quotas.
Both the association and the Commerce Ministry have admitted that the request may be hard to fulfill but are pushing onward nonetheless. An evaluation of the EU market has shown that if it relinquishes itself from restrictions imposed by the World Trade Organization, it could completely do away with trade quotas. The Thai Broiler Processing Exporters Association is thus pushing the Thai government to forge a free trade agreement with the EU both as a nation and as a member of the ASEAN.
