Typhoon Ketsana causes $76 mln in losses in Philippine agriculture

MANILA, Oct.1 (Xinhua) — The Philippine agriculture sector incurred 3.6 billion pesos (about 76 million U.S. dollars) worth of losses as tropical depression “Ondoy” (international code name: “Ketsana”) flooded key farm area in Luzon, northern Philippines.

In a report issued on Thursday, the Philippine department of agriculture said that “Ondoy,” which swept the country last weekend, damaged not only standing crops, fisheries and livestock but also farm equipment and other infrastructure.

“The department is still receiving updates on the damages to concerned regional field units and will report on the developments, including the plans for rehabilitation and action taken regarding providing assistance to affected farmers and fisher folk as soon as these are available,” said Marites D. Bernardo, chief of the agriculture department’s central action center.

The rice sector posted the biggest amount of damage at 3.28 billion pesos (about 70 million U.S. dollars). An estimated 190,624 tons of palay (paddy rice) were damaged and 137,703 hectares of rice lands were submerged. The agriculture department expects that standing crops in 118,733 hectares will be able to recover.

“Ondoy” also damaged nearly 6,000 hectares of fish ponds, killed thousands of poultry and livestock; and destroyed standing crops of corn and vegetables.
