Suthep: Govt may enforce ISA in Bangkok to curb UDD
BANGKOK, 9 October 2009 (NNT) – The government may enforce the Internal Security Act (ISA) in the capital city of Bangkok from 15 to 25 October 2009 in order to control rallies of the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), according to Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban.
The deputy prime minister has demanded the UDD to stage its rallies peacefully in compliance with the law. He said the government would take care of the situation during its major assemblies closely in order to prevent any political turmoil within the Kingdom. He noted that there had been no signs of violence thus far.
Mr Suthep added that the government might activate the ISA in Bangkok from 15-25 October 2009 in order to prevent disturbances of some anti-government groups during the 15th ASEAN Summit organized at Phetchaburi’s Cha-am district and Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Hua-Hin district from 23 to 25 October 2009. A decision for the enforcement will be made again from situational evaluation and the law must be first approved by the cabinet.
Earlier, the cabinet endorsed the ISA enforcement in both Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces in order to keep the upcoming 15th ASEAN Summit going on smoothly.
