Passengers flock to central station as southbound trains resume
BANGKOK, Oct 22 (TNA) – Homeward-bound travellers and holiday-goers flocked to Hua Lamphong station Thursday after southbound trains resumed full service prior to the three-day public holiday, which will begins on Friday.
Governor Yutthana Thapcharoen of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and top managers were present to launch a locomotive moved to the capital from Hat Yai station for assignment to the southern routes.
The locomotive was used in a Bangkok-Hat Yai train Thursday. Krit Saringchaithawat, Chief of the Mechanical Engineering Department said after checking the locomotive that it is 100 per cent safe.
The deadman control, a device used to prevent accidents in case a driver dozes off, is functional and not defective as claimed by the SRT labour union.
Four locomotives were earlier kept at Hat Yai station as the SRT labour union claimed they were defective and unserviceable.
The southern line trains were fully operational on Thursday with 20 trains running to and from the southern region, said Mr Yutthana.
Speaking about the labour union complaint filed to the police against SRT executives not maintaining a locomotive, claiming that it caused the train derailment at Khao Tao Station, the governor warned that such a move could backfire if it turns out to be an abuse of their own rights.
He emphasized that SRT executives always ordered maintenance of locomotives and did not ignore safety concerns.
A crowded passenger train route number 84 Trang-Bangkok en route from the southern province of Trang to the capital derailed earlier at Khao Tao Station in the resort town of Hua Hin in Prachuab Khiri Khan, killing at least seven passengers, while nearly 90 others were injured. (TNA)
