Seoul City selects this year’s foreign honorary citizens
SEOUL, Oct. 27 (Yonhap) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government on Tuesday selected 16 foreigners from 13 countries as honorary citizens of the city, including the editor of Yonhap News Agency’s Spanish-language news service, for their contribution to the capital’s development and cultural exchanges with their home countries.
Roxana Alvelais from Mexico, who has resided in Seoul for over 16 years, was recognized for her role in distributing Korean news and culture to Spanish-speaking community worldwide.
Eric Swanson, general manager of the Millennium Seoul Hilton, Nick Reilly, president of General Motors Asia-Pacific, and John Walker, chairman of Macquarie Korea, were also selected as honorary citizens.
The municipal government has been giving the citizenship to foreigners every year since 1958, with those having earned the honor now totaling 607 people from 90 nations.
Previous recipients include former coach of South Korea’s national football squad Guus Hiddink of the Netherlands, former U.S. Ambassador Christopher Hill, and American football player Hines Ward.
This year’s recipients will be recognized at a ceremony Wednesday. (Yonhap)
