Malaysia expresses support to D8 charter

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) — Malaysia said here on Monday that it supported the idea that the Group of Eight Developing Islamic Countries (D8) needs a charter.

This was the first time such a charter was being studied by theD8 Commission, which met here on Saturday, said Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman.

“Malaysia welcomes the Commission’s submission and is ready to lend our approval for the Commission to begin work on the draft Charter,” he told the 12th Session of the D8 Council of Ministers here.

He said that Malaysia had supported and presented its views regarding the Charter at the 27th Commission meeting ended here on Saturday.

The D8 ministers’ 12th session held here on Monday was preceded by the 27th Session of the D8 Commission Meeting on Friday and Saturday.

He also said that the D8 Secretariat needs to operate in a business-like way by being cost effective, working smart and results oriented.

A lean and small secretariat was appropriate for a small organization like the D8, but it needed to be creative and learn from the work of other more established organizations and successful models.

He also said that the Secretariat should deploy latest technologies to save on time and reduce travel and excessive expenditure.

On D8 agreements, Anifah called for continuous engagement and collaboration amongst member countries as that would draw considerable benefits for all member countries.

He said this was also in line with the objective of forming theD8 to facilitate collaboration in the economic sector through sharing of expertise and experience to raise member countries’ global position.

More efforts should be exerted on improving the pecuniary advantages of countries by introducing and implementing practical economic programs on an incremental basis, added the minister.

Anifah also said that the D8 member countries should determine the selection of programs and activities for collective benefits through a consensus decision making process.

While trade cooperation, agriculture and food security directly contributed towards the prosperity of a country, Anifah said the grouping should place higher priorities over these areas.

He also said programs of work should not be too taxing to prevent the loss of interest and lack of participation in the activities from taking place.

Established in 1997, the D8 comprises of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
