House yet to replace disgraced lawmaker
House of Representatives deputy speaker Pramono Anung from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) says the House leadership will wait for the United Development Party (PPP) to submit its official report regarding one of its legislators, currently detained in a graft case.
“There is a possibility that Dimyati may be replaced, depending on the severity of charges he may face,” he said.
“At the end of the day, we do not want the House to end up a mere protection bunker for corruptors,” he added.
Dimyati, a former regent from Banten, was arrested on Wednesday night by the Banten Prosecutor’s Office.
Dimyati had been named a suspect in the alleged misuse of a Rp 200 billion (US$18 million) loan from Bank Jabar along with M. Acang, a member of Banten legislative council.
Acang has been detained since October 2008 and is currently standing trial for his alleged crimes. Prosecutors have accused him of masterminding the handing out of bribes to all council members to secure the loan.
Dimyati is in his first term serving as a House of Representatives legislator. His arrest took place less than two months after he took his oath.
