Sungai Langat Deepening Project Ahead Of Schedule
KUALA LANGAT, Nov 25 (Bernama) — The deepening of Sungai Langat in Sijangkang near here to facilitate efficient waterway navigation is 30 per cent completed, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas.
Scheduled for completion by October next year, he said the RM34 million project carried out by NYL Corporation Sdn Bhd was ahead of schedule.
When completed, it will provide smooth navigation for vessels built by a shipyard, NGV Tech Sdn Bhd, which was situated on the river, he told reporters after checking on the progress of the project at Mile 7 Sijangkang near here Wednesday.
Under the project, the upper reaches of Sungai Langat for a distance of 1.3km are being deepened to six metres while the banks strengthened for 625 metres to prevent erosion.
Uggah said NGV Tech was building 70 vessels, including a passenger ship which could carry 2,000 people.
“The vessels could only ply the waters of a least four metres in depth. The river is very shallow during dry spell when you can even see the muddy riverbed,” he added.
He said 19 per cent of the Sungai Langat flood mitigation project under the second economic stimulus package had been completed while the clean-up project was 60 per cent completed.
