S. Korea’s presidential council asks Seoul to invite DPRK to G20

SEOUL, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) — A presidential council on inter-Korean policies said Wednesday that the South Korean government should invite the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) as an observer to the Group of 20 summit set to be held in Seoul next year to bring the country to the global society.

“It would be meaningful to invite a North Korean (DPRK) delegate (to the G-20 summit) so that the country could discuss ways to join international financial agencies and draw foreign investment,” the National Unification Advisory Council (NUAC) said in a statement announced at its general assembly in Seoul.

According to the NUAC, the G-20 meeting will be an opportunity for the participants to share views on ways to revitalize the DPRK economy.

The NUAC also stressed that Seoul should maintain dialogue with Pyongyang as it persuades the country to denuclearize.

The council also highlighted the need to engage in high-level talks with the DPRK in order to seek a resolution of the nuclear problem.

“There also is a need to hold an inter-Korean summit to resolve the nuclear problem, seek peace on the Korean Peninsula and discuss economic cooperation,” the council added.

The G-20 summit was decided to be held in South Korea in November next year, following this year’s Pittsburgh meeting and next June’s gathering in Canada.
