Merkel voices support for Greece
BERLIN, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel voiced on Thursday in Bonn her support for Greece, saying the European Union (EU) countries have “common responsibility” to help Greece.
Merkel made the remarks in response to the reports that Fitch Ratings Inc, a ratings agency, downgraded Greek sovereign debt earlier this week.
Speaking to a press conference, Merkel said that leaders of the27 EU member states would discuss the financial situation in Greece at a two-day summit beginning in Brussels later on Thursday night.
“If something happens in one country then all other countries are affected as well, as we have a common currency we also have a common responsibility,” she said.
Merkel rejected the speculation that Greece might go bankrupt.
“One shouldn’t over-value the issue, there are deficits in other parts of the world as well,” she said.
“In order to have a factual discussion, I’d request that this not be exaggerated,” she added.
Earlier on Tuesday, Fitch cut Greece’s credit rating to BBB+ from A-, citing worries over the country’s medium-term outlook for public finances
The Greek government later downplayed the bankruptcy fears and insisted on Wednesday Athens could hold the line.
Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou vowed to do whatever it takes to bring the country’s huge deficit under control.
