Govt monitors UDD closely
BANGKOK, 7 March 2010 (NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs, Suthep Thaugsuban, has confirmed the government’s preparedness in monitoring the movement of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD).
Speaking about the upcoming rally of the UDD, Mr Suthep stated that he had been evaluating the situation on a continuous basis, and enforcement of a special law would be required if the situation was beyond control.
The deputy prime minister added that the government would be ready to facilitate the demonstration if it was not against the democratic rules; however, preventive measures would be taken if any actions were deemed as threats to the public.
Based on intelligence, Mr Suthep said he expected the UDD supporters would make their movement in many ways. He said some of them would assemble normally while some might make underground movements.
Regarding the mission of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva abroad during the rally period of the UDD, the deputy prime minister said he had advised the prime minister to perform his duties according to the original schedule.
