Suvarnabhumi Airport prepares contingency measures
BANGKOK, 11 March 2010 (NNT) – Suvarnabhumi International Airport has prepared measures in case of emergency upon the upcoming mass rally of the anti-government United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) this weekend.
Suvarnabhumi Airport Director, Niran Thiranartsin stated that contingency plans for the airport and traffic have been prepared. He said the airport had integrated their operations with the Korakod 52 crowd control plan of the police.
The airport director added that the airport rehearsed the operation with Samut Prakan provincial civilians last December. He said the plan had been upgraded for greater efficiency in facilitating passengers and their belongings to reach aircrafts.
The airport convened its staff to make an understanding and revise all operational directions. Another meeting will be scheduled on Thursday again with related sectors to keep facilitating passengers during the political rally.
The People’s Alliance for Democracy seized Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang International Airports in November 2008. All sides have been urging demonstrators not to repeat such an action due to the negative impacts that airport closures may have on the national image and economy.
In addition, Mr Niran suggested passengers travel to the airport early for fear of bad traffic during the demonstration period. International and domestic flight passengers are advised to spare about three to four hours and two to three hours respectively. They are also recommended to have their travel documents prepared and abide by regulations for faster procedures.
