PM demands a review of paddy price increase by 200 THB/ton
BANGKOK, 17 March 2010 (NNT) – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva suggested a review of the paddy buying price increase at 200 THB/ton as it was not in line with the government’s income guarantee scheme.
Commerce Minister Portiva Nakasai, stated that Mr Abhisit, as the chairman of the National Rice Policy Committee, disagreed with the ministry’s measure to add 200 THB in paddy buying price from farmers. The Prime Minister viewed that the measure was incompatible with the government’s income guarantee scheme.
The Commerce Minister said that she would propose other measures to solve the falling price of rice in the market including the increase of rice buying from farmers as she believed the measure would help raise the price. Ms Portiva added that she had instructed the Foreign Trade Department to schedule a road show abroad to sell rice on a government-to-government basis.
