Public Health Ministry warns against the use of substandard white clay talc
BANGKOK, 5 April 2010 (NNT) – The Public Health Ministry warns against the use of substandard white clay talc in Songkran celebrations.
Deputy Public Health Minister Phansiri Kullanartsiri stated that during Songkran Festival, people normally used white clay talc mixed with color or other synthetic materials to celebrate the water feast. She said that last year a random test found 22 samples of white clay talc substandard. The samples were found to be contaminated with microbes and heavy metals. Also found is pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria that causes eye infection. Clostridium and E coli salmonella were also detected. These bacteria, when ingested, would cause diarrhea within 8-22 hrs.
The Deputy Minister cited that the operators in Lop Buri, the major source of white clay talc manufacturing, had been given instructions on the standards of the production process and packaging. She believed that this year any substandard talc would not be found and the public was suggested to carefully check details on the label before buying the materials.
