Songkran festivities on Khao San Road called off
BANGKOK, 11 April 2010 (NNT) – The Khao San Road Business Association announced cancellations of all Songkran celebrations on Khao San Road this year due to the recent clash between state authorities and anti-government United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD).
Mr Surat Wongcharnsilp, Chairman of the Khao San Road Business Association, revealed that the association has decided to call off the celebrative event on Bangkok’s Khao San Road during the upcoming Songkran holidays to ensure the public safety. He said the area was currently quiet and all shops remained closed.
He projected that the country will lose at least 500 million THB in revenue owing to the cancellation of all Songkran activities on Khao San Road.
The clashes between security officers and anti-government supporters took place at Bangkok’s Rachadamnoen Avenue, nearby Khao San road on Saturday as the state authorities tried to disperse the crowd of protesters to seize back the areas occupied by the UDD.
A total of 19 deaths and 825 injuries have been reported thus far during the riot.
