Troops foil bombing, recover Abu Sayaaf explosive in S. Philippines
ZAMBOANGA CITY, the Philippines, April 16 (Xinhua) — Philippine marines foiled a bombing attack of the Abu Sayyaf after a powerful improvised bomb planted in a village of the southern province of Basilan was recovered by the troops late Friday, the military said.
The bomb was recovered after the intelligence unit of the Marine Battalion Landing Team 1 (MBLT) received information that an improvised explosive device (IED) was abandoned near a creek in Barangay Upper Maligue, Isabela City.
The MBLT1 under Col. Fernando Gomez, K9 unit and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team launched a search and recovered the bomb about 5 p.m. local time Friday, said Lt. Gen. Ben Dolorfino, commander of Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom).
The bomb was safely disrupted on sight as the troops were cautious that it might be detonated by the Abu Sayyaf militant remotely.
Pieces of evidence were recovered for investigation.
Dolorfino believed that the recovered bomb could be part of the bombs that were planted by the Abu Sayyaf in Isabela City last Tuesday where 14 people, including three Abu Sayyaf militants, were killed in the explosion and attacks by the Abu Sayyaf group.
The 380-strong Abu Sayyaf group, founded in the early 1990s by religious extremists, is notorious for kidnappings, bombings and even beheadings in the south of the Philippines over the past decade.
