Australian defense picks Thales to provide satcoms for AWD

CANBERRA () — Australian defense company Thales has been chosen to provide satellite communications equipment for the navy’s three new air warfare destroyers (AWDs) in a 9 million dollar (7.48 million U.S. dollars) deal, defenses force announced on Thursday.

Minister for , Materiel and Science said the AWD Alliance, comprising the Organization, ASC and Raytheon, had selected Thales because it offered modern proven technology and value for money.

“The AWD will go to sea with a communications system that will not only meet the operational needs of a modern warship, but also allows the ships’ crew to keep in touch with family and friends via email and Internet services,” Combet said in a statement.

“This system will provide worldwide coverage of high-speed broadband for multiple users for both voice and data services. The system also includes equipment critical to meeting safety at sea obligations.”

Under the AWD program launched in 2007, Australia will build three advanced warships based on the Spanish-designed , at a cost of 8 billion dollars (6.65 billion U.S. dollars). A fourth may be built.

The three will be named Hobart, Brisbane and Sydney. The project was on track to deliver HMAS Hobart in December 2014, HMAS Brisbane in the first quarter of 2016, and HMAS Sydney in mid-2017.

Combet said the AWD satellite communications system incorporated equipment from leading SATCOM suppliers including ViaSat, SITEP, and Thrane.

Some of the equipment has already been deployed on warships and this commonality will result in efficiencies in both training and maintenance support, Combet said.

The contract will support 20 jobs.
