Pakistani Taliban leader killed by Afghan forces
ISLAMABAD (Xinhua)– Pakistani Taliban leader Maulvi Fazlullah was reportedly killed along with his six other Taliban commanders in Nuristan province of Afghanistan Wednesday night, however Pakistani Taliban denied the report.
Pakistani Taliban leader Maulvi Faqir Muhammad said that it was unfounded and baseless, according to local media.
Fazlullah’s death was confirmed by Afghan officials but NATO officials are keeping mum over the issue.
“It would be a jolt to Taliban in Pakistan,” commented Brigadier Mahmood Shah, the former Secretary of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).
However, disagreeing with Afghan authorities that Fazlullah was killed during fighting with Afghan forces, Shah said, “He was not a fighter and was handicapped with imputed legs.”
“It looks like that he had escaped into Afghanistan and was captured and killed,” the security analyst and former Pakistani official said.
Fazlullah, 31, was chief of the banned group Tehrik Nifaz Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM) in the restive Swat area, an ally of Tehrik Taliban Pakistan (TTP). He was son-in-law of the national network of the disbanded TNSM Chief Sufi Muhammad in the troubled tribal areas of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan.
Fazlullah was infamous as “Mullah Radio” for running a FM radio station disseminating extremist views of Taliban in the troubled area.
