Philippine gov’t dismisses UN report on children rights violation

MANILA () — The Philippine foreign affairs department branded as “false” the report of the United Nations, which accused the Philippine military of using children in armed conflict.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the department said the UN cited “isolated incidents” committed by the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

“The allegations were investigated and verified by the ( Philippine military) and found to be false,” the department said.

The department added the military’s comments have been submitted to the UN Security Council Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict.

“Special Representative of the Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflict Radhika Coomaraswamy highlighted the importance of bringing to fruition the full implementation of the action plan signed by the UN with the MILF (Moro Islamic Liberal Front). He also commended the for its openness in making the undertaking possible,” the department said.

The Philippines continues to reassure the UN Security Council of its commitment to the promotion and protection of the rights of children in discussions with the Security Council Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict.

In his first annual report to the Security Council, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon listed the Philippines as one of the world’s worst child rights violators in the last five years, along with Somalia, Congo, Myanmar, Colombia, Sudan and Uganda.

The 51-page report released on May 21, revealed that dozens of children were either killed in conflict situations or used by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, communist New People’s Army, the separatist Front rebels, and the terrorist Abu Sayyaf group in combat operations.
