Working in an Integrated Manner to Move Thailand Forward Cited as the Best Solution to Security Threats
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva stated that security problems faced by Thailand were very complicated and they could not be solved separately. He cited the working style in an integrated manner to move Thailand forward as the best solution to security threats.
In his keynote address “National Security and Prosperity: Direction for the Future” at a meeting held by the National Defense College on June 11, the Prime Minister said that security matters today differ from those in the old days, as they also cover various issues concerning economic and social development, as well as cultural diversity.
He regarded Thailand’s present situation as one of the most challenging periods in Thai history. However, the Prime Minister is confident in the country’s good potential and its strong fundamentals, as evident from Thailand’s high economic growth, ranking third in the world, during the first three months of this year. Even in April and May, economic figures were not as bad as anticipated by many people.
He is also optimistic about the current social crisis, saying that it might encourage young people to pay greater attention to national interests. Representatives of the academic sector told him that forces of the youth should be mobilized as well, to help in the national reconciliation process. Because of the rapid changes in the world, the Prime Minister believes that there is no single formula for tackling all problems. People must be involved in the learning process to overcome them.
In his statement at the Special Event entitled “Security and Economic Cooperation in Eurasia in the 21st Century,” held in Turkey on June 7, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said that Thailand’s commitment to a liberal economy helped the country mirror the rest of Asia’s rapid economic recovery by expanding 12 percent in the first quarter of 2010 – Thailand’s highest growth rate in 15 years. This progress goes hand in hand with ASEAN’s goals to become a single market, called the ASEAN Economic Community, by 2015.
The Foreign Minister stated that economic cooperation would enhance prosperity, but terrorism and drug trafficking continue to pose major threats to domestic and international security, especially as it hampers economic progress and investment in affected countries. International cooperation is crucial to Thailand’s efforts in preventing and handling the problems of international terrorism.
In addition, he said, Thailand sees interfaith dialogue as part of preventive diplomacy and the country’s participation at relevant international fora will encourage a network of trust, tolerance, and understanding among countries. To offer creative solutions to the problem of drug trafficking, Thailand is known for successfully bringing sustainable alternative livelihood development to Afghanistan and Aceh in Indonesia by eliminating narcotic crop cultivation through sustainable poverty alleviation. He reiterated Thailand’s readiness to further build linkages between all regional organizations to enhance confidence-building measures between them.
