Vietnam, U.S. to actively participate in TPP negotiations
HANOI (Xinhua) — Vietnam and the United States vowed to take active part in next rounds of negotiations to set up a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement to beef up the bilateral trade and economic ties, U.S. Ambassador Demetrios Marantis told a press conference here on Thurday.
This year Vietnam and the U.S. will mark the 15-year normalization of the bilateral diplomatic ties. The bilateral trade between Vietnam and the U.S. jumped to 15.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2009, compared to one billion U.S. dollars in 2001, Dementrios Maratis said at the conference.
“We will discuss the future prospect and next steps to boost bilateral trade and economic cooperation, including the next rounds for TPP to be a focus, the U.S. ambassador said.
“TPP will boost competitiveness of Vietnam’s economy in global economy and increase enthusiasm and interest from the U.S. businesses in Vietnam’s business environment, he said.
“Vietnam should take active part in shaping the rules of TPP together with the United States, he urged.
TPP’s next rounds will help increase the U.S.’s engagement trade with the Asia-Pacific region and vice versa, he said.
The U.S. has become the biggest among the foreign investors in Vietnam and Vietnam is the 17th biggest export market of the United States, he said.
